    Summary

Riverside Rest Home is a county-owned facility characterized by higher-than-average registered nurse staffing and zero reliance on contract labor, though recent records show an increase in inspection findings and a moderate reduction in weekend care hours.

    Detailed Analysis

Analysis of CMS records for Riverside Rest Home shows a facility that maintains staffing levels above state and national averages. The data indicates residents receive 4.32 total hours of nursing care per resident per day, significantly higher than the New Hampshire average of 3.88 hours. Specifically, registered nurse care is provided at 1.15 hours per resident day, which is approximately 55% higher than the statewide average. A notable finding is the lack of reliance on agency or contract labor; with 0% contract staffing reported, care is provided exclusively by permanent facility staff, which typically supports better continuity of care. However, data shows a 15.7% reduction in staffing hours on weekends compared to weekdays, a trend that may impact the consistency of resident services.

Health inspection records show four standard inspection findings in the most recent February 2025 survey, an increase from a single finding in the previous year. These findings included issues with professional standards of quality, medication labeling, laboratory service timeliness, and infection control protocols. All recent findings were classified at a 'D' severity level, indicating isolated incidents with no immediate jeopardy. Fire safety records show 15 uncorrected findings, including issues with emergency preparation training and automatic closing devices on fire doors. The facility has not incurred any financial penalties or payment denials in the current three-year window, reflecting a stable regulatory history relative to state averages.

    Key Findings

The facility reported 1.15 hours of registered nurse care per resident per day, which is higher than the New Hampshire state average of 0.74 hours.

Records show zero percent of the nursing workforce was comprised of contract or agency staff, indicating residents receive care from permanent employees.

Total nursing care hours drop from 4.31 on weekdays to 3.63 on weekends, representing a 15.7% decrease in available nursing attention.

"I was in this place to visit my father. The public bathrooms were locked and no one could seem to unlock it. Went to another unit and WOW IT WAS DISCUSTING! This place is a dump! I’m so sorry to see ! It needs ventilation. This is located in the dementia area. Nothing like a COVID spread! I cannot tell anyone enough of the scene we walked into. Beware!"

"My father entered Riverside Rest Home in the Unit for persons with Dementia. Kristi Hughes was his Social Worker, and was very attentive/available and caring. The staff on the unit were also very patient and compassionate, dealing with varying degrees of dementia, and with various personalities. We were never displeased with his care, and always found him happy when we visited several times a week. Excellent! ------- Following the death of my father, I decided that I wanted to volunteer at Riverside as a means of assisting other elderly, and also "giving back" to the employees who gave my father such great care. I am volunteering with persons with memory care issues, and usually with those who have no visitors. Prior to the current pandemic, I was there fairly frequently. I can easily say that in visiting without prior notice, the unit, activities area, hair salon, hallways, elevator, and office areas are always clean. When in those environments I observed, and assisted my friend in interactions with, staff who are friendly, engaged, and interested in residents. Staff know the residents. Residents are as involved as desired, and as they are individually able, in a variety of daily activities, presented by a creative team. Seeing a person with cerebral palsy go for the first bike ride in her life on an adaptive bike that was obtained with the assistance of Northeast Passage, brought me to happy tears! That's an example of how much the staff cares, and how far they will go to bring joy to a resident. This may be an older, county nursing home, but this amazing staff works to make it a welcoming, caring, and active place to be when someone must have 24 hour care. It's been 10 years since I started going into Riverside, when my father moved there. I'm the type of person who would not remain quiet if I saw anything happening that could affect a resident negatively, no matter how minute the issue. Honestly, in those10 years, I have only observed one staff, on only one occasion, whom I considered to be in a grouchy mood. I think that's normal human behavior, anywhere! I can say I plan on choosing Riverside should any other family members, or I, myself, require a nursing home in the future. I trust them!"

"To say that we are disappointed is an understatement. We understood it is a county nursing home but they never answer the phone, have no protocol in place for bathing, and most of the staff is defensive when asked about any of it. Due to Covid now, it is a nightmare and we are left with nothing. My mother has gone from active to non verbal since going there in just three months. She doesn't receive medical attention and they give her way too much medication without any review or doctors evaluation. The family is in the dark. Staff is uncooperative. EDIT: she died there as a result of their negligence"

"While not the newest facility, Riverside is very very clean and very pleasant. The staff, at all levels, are excellent. Riverside beats any "for profit" nursing home I have ever encountered (and I have dealt with many)."

"Very pleased with the care of our family member for over 3 years now after stroke. Good attitudes beget good treatment. It’s never easy caring for people in many different stages of health issues and these dedicated people do their best."

"My sister has resided at Riverside for three years due to declining health issues. Riverside staff are extremely warm and welcoming, very professional, and caring! I can't thank them all for their warm spirt and caring attitude. I greatly appreciate all that they do !"

"My mom has been living there for a bit of time and although some of the workers are pleasant to deal with a lot of things have been stolen from my mom. Her coffee maker, a Panasonic tv, a t-shirt that says Detroit Redwings on it and now her cigarettes. I am very disappointed that a home that should be caring for elderly people is theiving and and being disrespectful. This is outright unacceptable and not OK! I will be following up and persuing this matter further."

"Exceptionally good care for my sisterinlaw who struggles with advanced Multiple Sclerosis. Professional staff deliver services in a compassionate way. Very thorough in developing a comprehensive program with our family."

"1st let me say that , My Sister was sent to Riverside from Leaving a Hospital after a Fire at her Apartment ( In Dover Nh ),when most to go there by "Choice" ...burned & bad knee's but she still could walk prior to Riverside, that was over 18 Month's Ago, After the 3rd month we've tried to get her back home that was fully repaired and ready , but delay delay delay and lack of transportation to doctors appointments ,reports written with un-true statement's , the lack of giving Speciality Rehab Service's , or Under staffing of nursing HELP , My Family member became Bed Ridden ,unable too walk , and at times Lost Hope in ever being released back home , when some would say she could leave at any time but against Medical Advice , and find your own transportation "WOW" , realizing it then was all about $$$$$ and a head count ,at the end of the day, , , Dollar's Count , But People matter or should matter MORE: There are some that do care Grace ,Jen ,and some nurse's who's respect for Family member's is surely viewed by there action's , Thank You ! , the outher's questionable by there action's or lack thereof, shifting blame ,pointing finger's , or I tried , I called , Im waiting ......in the meantime my Sister lay's in a Bed ,strong still in her Faith ,and loved by Family that just wont give up on helping her get back home ,when other's may just see her as a Monthly payment , , , there's more to the story Trust Me ,nursing homes should be a option , not a prison"
