    NursingHomeIQ Analysis

    Summary

Bedford Care Center of Newton is a 60-bed facility characterized by high staffing-to-resident ratios, low staff turnover relative to state averages, and a recent history of few inspection findings.

    Detailed Analysis

The data indicates that Bedford Care Center of Newton maintains staffing and inspection profiles that exceed both state and chain averages. The facility provides 4.69 total hours of nursing care per resident per day, including 0.67 hours from registered nurses and 1.00 hour from licensed practical nurses. This staffing level is supported by a nursing turnover rate of 30.2%, which is notably lower than the Mississippi state average of 47.8%. While the facility utilized contract staffing for 28.4% of its registered nurse hours, its overall reliance on contract nursing assistants remained low at 1.3%.

Records show a significant upward trajectory in regulatory performance over the last two years, with the overall quality rating rising from the lowest possible score to the highest. Public inspection records from November 2025 identified one finding related to administrative documentation of resident rights, a decrease from five findings in the previous cycle. Although the facility holds a high overall rating, quality measures for long-stay residents—which track clinical outcomes over time—were rated at the lowest level (1 out of 5), contrasting with the higher rating (4 out of 5) for short-stay residents. The gap between weekday and weekend staffing is 9.5%, which is within a range suggesting relatively consistent coverage throughout the week.

    Key Findings

The facility provides 4.69 total hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is higher than the Mississippi state average of 4.21 hours.

Weekend staffing levels for all nursing roles (4.24 hours) are 9.5% lower than weekday levels (4.69 hours).

Staffing depth is the strongest predictor of care quality. Facilities routinely cut staff on evenings and weekends — the shifts when falls happen and call lights go unanswered.

"The employees are so kind and helpful and are taking excellent care of my father. He is settled and seems happy. Facilities are clean albeit a little old."

"My mother was in Bedford Care Center for almost 3 years in their memory care unit before the memory care unit started going through the process of closing down at end of March 2026. The team at Bedford worked with us to find a new nursing home for my mother. During my mother's years at Bedford I formed warm working relationships with the staff there. During my mother's last few months at Bedford I spent a lot of time speaking with Cheryl and Michelle. They both were very professional, warm and communicative. I had a special situation where I live outside of Mississippi, therefore I spent a lot of time on phone calls with different staff members about my mother's care. I have appreciated how patient and engaged Bedford staff was with me about my mother's care. I appreciate Connie for always answering the phone with such warmth. I am going to miss the staff at Bedford very much."
